All Chrysler 8.25 axles are c-clip.
91-96 XJ: Chrysler 8.25 - 27 spline, 1.17" diameter shafts, 8.25" ring gear, 3" axle tube
97-01 XJ: Chrysler 8.25 - 29 spline, 1.21" diameter shafts, 8.25" ring gear, 3" axle tube
- The switchover to 29 spline is believed to happen in late May of 1996

- The carriers are different due to the spline count
- the housings having different carrier races. You can upgrade your 27 spline to 29 spline with a little machine work.
- Diff bearings, pinion bearings, and axle bearings are all the same
Benefits:
- Large Tubes
- Pinion almost as strong as a D60
- Driver and Passenger side axle shafts are the same lengths so they are interchangable. Allows you to carry 1 spare instead of two separate spares.
- Good upgrade from the D35.
- Can hold up to a 33/35" tire.
Disadvantages:
- C-Clip which means axle shaft can walk out after breaking.
- SLIGHTY weaker than a D44
