Chrysler 8.25 Axle Information

All Chrysler 8.25 axles are c-clip.

91-96 XJ:  Chrysler 8.25 - 27 spline, 1.17" diameter shafts, 8.25" ring gear, 3" axle tube
97-01 XJ:  Chrysler 8.25 - 29 spline, 1.21" diameter shafts, 8.25" ring gear, 3" axle tube

  • The switchover to 29 spline is believed to happen in late May of 1996
  • 27 and 29 spline comparison
    • The carriers are different due to the spline count
    • the housings having different carrier races.   You can upgrade your 27 spline to 29 spline with a little machine work.
    • Diff bearings, pinion bearings, and axle bearings are all the same

  • Large Tubes

  • Driver and Passenger side axle shafts are the same lengths so they are interchangable.  Allows you to carry 1 spare instead of two separate spares.
  • Good upgrade from the D35.
  • Can hold up to a 33/35" tire.

Disadvantages:

  • C-Clip which means axle shaft can walk out after breaking.
  • SLIGHTY weaker than a D44

Suggested Upgrades:

  • ZJ Disc Brake Upgrade from a D35
  • Hardened Steel Axle Shafts
  • Pumpkin Lip Trim for Clearance
  • LubeLocker 8.25" Diff Gasket
    • Original price used to be $16 and as of 10/12 its now $21.
